Condemned to death, the ninja Gabimaru the Hollow remains strangely indifferent to his fate. After a lifetime steeped in violence, Gabimaru is convinced that death is a fitting end for him. Yet, every execution attempt mysteriously ends in failure. Eventually, Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, a young member of a prestigious clan of executioners, is assigned to carry out the sentence—but she does not strike him down.

Believing that Gabimaru is kept alive by the powerful bond he shares with his wife, Sagiri chooses another path and offers him a chance at complete absolution. Should he venture to the island of Shinsekyo and retrieve the legendary Elixir of Life, an artifact rumored to bestow immortality, and return it to the shogun, his crimes will be forgiven and his freedom granted.

However, none of those who have set foot on Shinsekyo in pursuit of the fabled elixir have ever come back sane—or alive. Despite having no knowledge of the countless perils that await, Gabimaru accepts the proposal, joining ten other condemned prisoners, driven by the hope that he and his wife may one day live a peaceful life together.
