High schooler Rakurou Hizutome has an unusual pastime: he enjoys playing badly designed games—titles so poorly balanced or riddled with bugs that they are nearly impossible to play. Those who share this niche interest may know him by his in-game alias, Sunraku. For his next adventure, Rakurou is advised to try Shangri-La Frontier, a highly popular and well-polished virtual reality game, offering him a break from the awful games he has been enduring.

After logging into the game, Rakurou chooses to sell almost all of his initial equipment to earn extra money, keeping only a pair of boxers, a bird mask, and a few weapons. He quickly becomes absorbed as he carefully trains and levels up his character. Yet, upon facing some fearsome monsters, he realizes he may have underestimated how demanding a mainstream game can be. As Rakurou moves forward, he relies on every skill he has honed through his past gaming experiences. Soon enough, Sunraku’s unconventional playstyle begins to shake the world of Shangri-La Frontier.
