At the end of the 19th century, the brutal Bakumatsu era came to an end, giving way to the Meiji Restoration and a new chapter for Japan. With the fighting over, the feared assassin known as Hitokiri Battousai vanished, leaving behind only myths and rumors.
Years later, a humble drifter named Kenshin Himura crosses paths with Kaoru Kamiya, the head of a small dojo in Tokyo struggling to survive. Kaoru is in pursuit of a man claiming to be Battousai, a ruthless killer who has been murdering both civilians and police officers. Even worse, this impostor boasts of using the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, the sword style created by Kaoru’s father—an art meant to protect life, not take it.
Kenshin offers his help in stopping the false Battousai and saving the dojo. What no one realizes at first is that Kenshin himself is the true legendary swordsman whose name still inspires fear. Though Kaoru eventually discovers his identity, she is moved by Kenshin’s vow to atone for his bloody past by defending others without killing, and she allows Kenshin to remain at her dojo. Yet despite his resolve, Kenshin soon finds himself confronted by lingering shadows from his past and new enemies born of the present.
