After their hometown’s destruction, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to join the Defense Force, a military organization dedicated to protecting Japan from monstrous creatures called “kaijuu.” Years later, 32-year-old Kafka has abandoned his dream and works cleaning up kaijuu remains, while Mina has risen to become a successful officer fulfilling their shared ambition.
Kafka’s life takes a turn when he meets Reno Ichikawa, a determined young coworker with aspirations of joining the Defense Force. Their routine is shattered when a rogue kaijuu attack puts both men in danger. Kafka heroically saves Reno but suffers severe injuries in the process.
While recovering, Kafka is attacked by another kaijuu, resulting in him gaining the ability to transform into a humanoid kaijuu with immense power. Nicknamed “Kaijuu No. 8” by the military, Kafka decides to use his newfound abilities to protect humanity. Partnering with Reno, he works to join warriors like Mina on the frontlines of the Defense Force.
